Better Communication Practices Part 1

baseball coach
As we’ve said in the past, one of the most important parts of managing a good league is having open and honest communication. Good communication not only entails making sure everyone gets the message but also that everyone understands it and acts accordingly. So, we’ve put together some communicating tips to help your league thrive at its best.

Know who you’re talking to
Managers and coaches have to communicate with a variety of people to keep everything running smoothly: players, coaches, parents, referees, etc. It’s important to know that your style of communication has to reflect who you’re talking to since the way you’d communicate with a young player would be vastly different from even an older player.
How you’re saying it matters
The message of what you’re saying is incredibly important, but what’s also very important is how you’re saying it. Understanding your tone is immensely important as you may be saying something in a way that automatically makes people defensive which makes them miss your meaning, or you may be saying something a little too nicely when someone need to get a more serious message across.
Listen
Communication is a two-way street. While managers and coaches have a majority of the power, it’s essential they’re still listening to every other member of the league and team. Be sure to keep yourself open to the concerns and suggestions of others in order to truly have open communication within the league.
